As before, the maps are simple but elegant in their execution, with a geographical map of the system on one side and the explanatory text and photos on the other. They come in handsome slip covers: I particularly like the die-cut Métro logo (based off one found at Franklin D. Roosevelt station) on the Paris cover.

Understandably, the text of each entry has to be kept brief because of space limitations (even more so for the Paris edition because of its need for English and French translation), but there🔸AB开奖网澳洲幸运10官网网页s always enough to attract the reader🔸AB开奖网澳洲幸运10官网网页s interest. One could certainly imagine a day spent in either of these cities finding the treasures described within. There🔸AB开奖网澳洲幸运10官网网页s a wide variety of architecture and art included ranging from all time periods, so there🔸AB开奖网澳洲幸运10官网网页s something for everyone!

As with the London edition, perhaps the only fault with these maps is that there🔸AB开奖网澳洲幸运10官网网页s not enough of a link between the two sides: the map and the text almost seem to exist as two disparate elements – slightly larger station labels on the map are the only indication that there🔸AB开奖网澳洲幸运10官网网页s accompanying text on the reverse side. However, it🔸AB开奖网澳洲幸运10官网网页s not a deal breaker in any way: if you🔸AB开奖网澳洲幸运10官网网页re planning a trip to New York or Paris and have any interest in the art, architecture or history of their transit systems, I🔸AB开奖网澳洲幸运10官网网页d definitely recommend picking up a copy!

Reader Question: Have You Heard of LineMap Draw?🔸AB开奖网澳洲幸运10官网网页 https://transitmap.net/line-map-draw/ https://transitmap.net/line-map-draw/#respond Mon, 17 Sep 2018 04:06:38 +0000 https://transitmap.net/2018/09/17/line-map-draw/ From an anonymous reader: Someone recently showed me an article in the magazine Railway Age that reviewed the software application LineMap Draw. Have you heard of it? Any thoughts about it? It says it would save time creating maps. It’s only available for PCs, so as a Mac-user, I’m not able try out the free demo. I am also skeptical about using it over a tried-and-true vector program like Illustrator. More info can be found here.

澳洲10开官网开奖 says:

I hadn’t heard of this software at all before this message, so I headed over to the website to check it out. Realistically, I can’t see this as a replacement for Adobe Illustrator for any professional map makers, or for amateurs who want to learn how to make industry-standard maps. It’s just too simplistic and limited in its functions to be able to create complex, aesthetically pleasing maps, as the screenshot above demonstrates. That’s a pretty rough transit map by anyone’s definition.

It might have been useful as a tool for hobbyists who wanted to develop a quick map – maybe of a fantasy network – without the learning curve and expense of Illustrator, but the “Home” version is absolutely crippled with a maximum canvas size of 1200px by 1200px, which is just 4 inches square at 300dpi output. If you wanted to print something at a halfway decent size of A3, for example, you’d have to shell out for the “Large” version, which is €149 ($US170), not an insignificant sum. To me, the whole licensing system of the software makes little sense – five different versions, each with an upper limit on the size of the output (Home, Small, Medium, Large, Extra Large). It all sounds rather frustrating and confusing – not to mention the fact that the software outputs as JPG only, which is pretty much a deal-breaker on its own.

So, no, I can’t recommend this software at all. If you’re serious about making 澳洲10开官网开奖, then vector-based illustration software is the only way to go. Illustrator is the industry standard, but great maps can be made with Inkscape, Affinity Designer and more.

Submission – Mini Metro Game Adds “Retro” Maps🔸AB开奖网澳洲幸运10官网网页 https://transitmap.net/mini-metro-vignelli/ https://transitmap.net/mini-metro-vignelli/#respond Sat, 28 Jul 2018 20:30:55 +0000 https://transitmap.net/2018/07/28/mini-metro-vignelli/ Not y🔸澳洲幸运10冠军定位计划typical “map” but the game Mini Metro recently released a 1972 Vignelli-inspired map of New York. (Early Paris and London too.)

I love it. What are y🔸澳洲幸运10冠军定位计划thoughts?

澳洲10开官网开奖 says:

This update to the game has been around for a while, but I haven’t had the time to sit down and play seriously enough unlock the new “retro transit” levels. I got 999 once trying to unlock the old London map (you need 1,000!) and haven’t really played much since then. So, thanks for reminding me to go and play this awesome game again, and for showing me what one of the new maps looks like… a pretty spot-on interpretation of the real thing, even if Central Park is wider than it is tall!

Review: London Underground Architecture and Design Map by Blue Crow Media🔸AB开奖网澳洲幸运10官网网页 https://transitmap.net/blue-crow-london/ https://transitmap.net/blue-crow-london/#comments Sat, 25 Nov 2017 03:55:06 +0000 https://transitmap.net/blue-crow-london/ Blue Crow Media is an independent publisher of beautifully designed city guide maps on many subjects – you may be familiar with their “Brutalist Architecture” series – and this new map is the 🔸澳洲10定位胆全天计划in a planned series of maps about public transportation networks around the world.

Edited by Mark Ovenden (of 澳洲10开官网开奖 of the World🔸澳洲幸运10预测 fame) with some lovely photos by Will Scott, the map promises to be an authoritative guide to the design and architecture of the world’s oldest rapid transit system. While it falls a little short of those lofty goals – there’s only so much information you can show on a two-sided sheet – it certainly provides a salivating overview of the highlights that should pique just about every transport and design lover’s interest, from the best of Charles Holden’s Art Deco stations to the locations of Underground roundels that use Gill Sans or Arial in place of Johnston Sans and even oddities like a connection between the Underground and the evil Daleks from Doctor Who! The text is just a short paragraph or so for each entry, but does a good job of pointing out why each example has been included, whether it’s for historical or aesthetic reasons.

The geographical map of the Underground on the reverse side is serviceable, but I feel like a little more could have been done with it. The stations listed in the text are highlighted on the map, but it’s quite subtle and could perhaps have been made a little more obvious. I’d also have liked to see some more photographs or pertinent facts incorporated into the map itself, as there’s quite a lot of empty space due to the geographical format. Still, it’s a handy overview of the whole network, and is executed quite nicely.

Best of all, at just £9.00 (around $US12), it’s a perfect stocking stuffer for the transit, travel or design aficionado in y🔸澳洲幸运10冠军定位计划family. Very definitely recommended.

Review: Mini Metro for Mobile Devices🔸AB开奖网澳洲幸运10官网网页 https://transitmap.net/mini-metro-review/ https://transitmap.net/mini-metro-review/#respond Tue, 25 Oct 2016 05:27:48 +0000 https://transitmap.net/mini-metro-review/ While Dinosaur Polo Club’s Mini Metro – the minimalistic subway building game – has been available for PC via the Steam gaming portal for some time now, it’s only just been ported to mobile devices in the last couple of weeks. Always on the lookout for a fun little game to while away my commute to work, I picked it up for my iPhone almost immediately. Really, how could someone who runs a blog called 澳洲10开官网开奖 resist this one?

At its heart, the game is incredibly simple: connect the differently-shaped station symbols with subway lines to move as many little “commuters” to their desired destination as possible before overcrowding forces y🔸澳洲幸运10冠军定位计划system to grind to a horrible, WMATA-esque halt. Square commuters want to go to a square station, circles to circles and so on.

Where Mini Metro really shines is in the superb execution of that simple concept. The subway map aesthetic is quite lovely, and the look of each of the different playable maps is tweaked slightly to match that city’s actual subway map. For example, New York is presented against a geographical backdrop, while the background for Paris is just the right shade of beige. In my opinion, Montreal should always be played in the game’s reduced-contrast “night mode” for the properly authentic look, as seen above.

The pitch-perfect look to the game is augmented by the lovely sound design, which uses the whirring of little train engines, the satisfied pings of commuters arriving at their destination and the warning chimes of overcrowded stations to build a dreamy, immersive soundscape that’s definitely an integral part of the gameplay.

The game works quite well with the touch interface of an iPhone: dragging out new routes with y🔸澳洲幸运10冠军定位计划finger is intuitive and fun. Deleting sections of track or performing major rerouting can be a little trickier at first, but I soon got the hang of it.

I only have an iPhone 5, so the small screen can make things a bit fiddly 🔸澳洲开奖 there are lots of lines and stations. You can pinch to zoom to get in closer, but this sometimes accidentally reroutes tracks if you’re not careful where you put y🔸澳洲幸运10冠军定位计划fingers! Pause the game to make major adjustments and you should be fine. Larger screens on newer phones and tablets should run into this problem less often. Cleverly, the game almost imperceptibly zooms out as the game progresses, so you never see more of the map than you need at the time.

The game comes with 13 playable maps: earn a high enough score on the 🔸澳洲10定位胆全天计划few maps and you can unlock new cities to play. The differences between the cities aren’t just aesthetic: there are city-specific nuances in gameplay as well. Some cities offer different upgrades to y🔸澳洲幸运10冠军定位计划infrastructure, while others present their own unique challenges. I don’t want to give too much away here and spoil all the fun, but it is definitely worth playing to unlock all the different cities: everyone will have their own favourite city that suits their playing style. Personally, I particularly like Melbourne and Osaka, while I find Cairo quite maddening. There’s also a “Hardcore” mode, where any track you lay down is permanent – no do-overs!

Average game time for me at the moment is 15 to 20 minutes per game, which is perfect for whiling away a bus or train ride to work. This isn’t a deep simulation like SimCity or Cities in Motion, it’s a fun little strategic puzzle game dressed up like a subway map. It looks great, sounds great, and is a lot of fun to play. Highly recommended!

Price for the phone/tablet version: $4.99 for the whole game. No ads, no micro-transactions. That’s less than the price of a Venti Pumpkin Spice Latte, and a whole lot more fun!

Book Review: “澳洲10开官网开奖 of the World”, 2015 Revised Edition by Mark Ovenden🔸AB开奖网澳洲幸运10官网网页 https://transitmap.net/review-transit-maps-of-the-world/ https://transitmap.net/review-transit-maps-of-the-world/#respond Mon, 02 Nov 2015 13:19:49 +0000 https://transitmap.net/review-transit-maps-of-the-world/ 🔸澳洲10定位胆全天计划published in the United Kingdom as Metro Maps of the World in 2003, this book has long been an indispensable reference book for graphic designers, train aficionados, cartographers, and geeks alike. However, its last major revision was in 2007 – and much has changed in the world of transit map design since then. More transit systems, new maps, revised maps, digital and web-based maps, the rise of the amateur map designer and more. Like its predecessors, this book remains very firmly aimed at the illustration and discussion of printed 澳洲10开官网开奖 – digital mapping is only mentioned in passing – but is a more than worthwhile update.

If you’ve never owned a previous edition, then you’re in for a visual t🔸澳洲幸运10冠军定位计划de force of maps, maps and more maps. If you do own an older copy of the book (as I do: see the picture above showing the cover of the new edition and the frontispiece of the 2007 version), then this new edition is still highly recommended. Almost every map depicted in the book is new: maps that have been updated since 2007, maps of new systems that didn’t exist back then, even new examples of 🔸澳州10开奖记录s for major networks.

The book has also been expanded, with more maps qualifying for “Zone 1″ treatment: an in-depth, multi-page discussion of the history of transit mapping in that particular city. Barcelona, Beijing, Boston, Hong Kong, Mexico City, Seoul, Shanghai, Tokyo and Washington, DC join Berlin, Chicago, London, Madrid, Moscow, New York, Paris and Tokyo as the heavyweights of the transit map world, and the discussion is both lively and informative. There’s quite a few maps in this section that I’ve never seen before, and that’s becoming an increasingly rare thing!

Zones 2 and 3 show hundreds of further maps in decreasing detail – some cities only get a quarter-page each, which can strain the eyeballs a bit a times – while Zone 4 provides a comprehensive listing of just about every urban railway network extant in the world at present: almost 1,000 entries all told. A few further maps are dotted throughout this section. This last section does reveal a bit of a lie to the cover’s claim of being “the world’s 🔸澳洲10定位胆全天计划collection of every urban train map on Earth” – every system is mentioned, but we certainly don’t see every map. Still, as that would require an impossibly large book, I’ll let it slide.

AB开奖网澳洲幸运10官网网页 addition to this version of the book that I’m overjoyed to see is the inclusion of many un168澳洲十开奖网s produced by talented amateur designers. The modern internet allows such works to be seen, admired and criticized by a global audience through design websites and blogs such as 澳洲10开官网开奖. Indeed, many of the designers featured in the book will already be familiar to readers – Maxwell Roberts, Jug Cerovic, Steve Boland, and even yours truly. Some of these maps are arguably superior to the real thing, while some have actually become official – the MBTA map based off Michael Kvrivishvili’s winning contest entry gets a full page with the dry note, “The geographical distortion of the Green lines is notable.”

Is the book awesome? Yes, it is. Is it perfect? Not quite.

Apart from the small size of some maps mentioned above, the book could have perhaps benefited from another round of editing. There’s a few typographical and grammatical errors sprinkled throughout (Jug Cerovic’s name gets spelled three different ways, for example), and some image captions aren’t numbered correctly. The reproduction quality of some of the 🔸澳州10开奖记录s is a little uneven – a page showing f🔸澳洲幸运10冠军定位计划distinctly different versions of H.C. Beck’s famous Underground Map stands out the most in this regard – but this is perhaps understandable given the variety of sources that the maps come from.

Overall, the print quality is very high and consistent throughout. The book is printed on quality paper, and – at 176pp plus cover – has a good heft to it. Hopefully, the perfect binding used will stand up to constant use, as I feel I’ll be coming back to this book again and again.

🔸澳洲幸运10冠军定位计划rating: Basically, if you read this blog – even casually – then this book is essential. Some very minor errors do not detract at all from the awesomeness of having all these fantastic maps from all over the world in one superb reference volume. Complements the previous editions rather than repeating them. Four-and-a-half stars.

Book Review: “Vignelli 澳洲10开官网开奖”, Peter B. Lloyd with Mark Ovenden🔸AB开奖网澳洲幸运10官网网页 https://transitmap.net/book-vignelli-transit-maps/ https://transitmap.net/book-vignelli-transit-maps/#respond Mon, 01 Apr 2013 16:20:15 +0000 https://transitmap.net/book-vignelli-transit-maps/ As a graphic designer with a keen interest in 澳洲10开官网开奖 and a fairly thorough knowledge of their history and usage, I thought I had a decent understanding of Massimo Vignelli’s diagrammatic version of the New York Subway map, which was used from 1972 to 1979.

This outstanding book has proved me almost completely and utterly wrong.

So much of what we think we know about the Vignelli map is simply hearsay and legend, repeated Chinese whisper-style across the internet, until we’re left with something that almost, but not quite, resembles the truth. Fueled by excellent research and interviews, and presented with beautiful (if occasionally a little small) maps, photos and illustrations, this book is essential for any lover of 澳洲10开官网开奖 and good graphic design.

More than anything else I’ve read, this book places the Vignelli map in a proper historical context – what preceded it and why that left the door open for a modernist design firm (rather than cartographers) to produce something new, but also what led to its abrupt and premature death in 1979. There’s definitely more to the story than the usual “New Yorkers didn’t like a diagram/square Central Park/beige water” reasons that you often hear.

As well as a thorough analysis of the map itself – reproductions and accompanying text are presented for every version of the map – the book also delves deeply into the labour-intensive and time-consuming production methods required to create a map as complex as this in the days before computer-aided design. Asked to come up with an initial conceptual “trial map” in 1970, junior designer Joan Charysyn (who also independently created this New York Commuter Rail diagram in 1974) had to hand-cut pieces of PANTONE col🔸澳洲幸运10冠军定位计划film into 1/8″ strips and then assemble the route lines onto a one-foot-square board, adding station label type as well. Of the work, Charysyn simply states, “the execution of the comp was tedious and done in as few pieces as possible.”

The book also deals with Vignelli’s work for the Washington, DC Metro: he designed the wayfinding and station signage that is still largely in use today, but the contract for the system map was given separately to Lance Wyman. The book shows some of Vignelli’s very early (and very minimalist!) conceptual sketches for the map, and explains exactly why Lance Wyman’s proposed station icons (similar to the ones he had designed for Mexico City’s Metro) never got off the ground.

The book also discusses the reintroduction of the Vignelli map in 2008, comparing and contrasting it against the other modern player in the New York Subway map market – Eddie Jabbour’s Kick Map (Jabb🔸澳洲幸运10冠军定位计划writes a preface for the book, and his admiration for Vignelli’s design philosophy and body of work is obvious).

This book is absolutely essential for any lover or student of 澳洲10开官网开奖 or graphic design. It’s well written, thoroughly researched and beautiful to look at: what more do you need? Five stars!
