Every so often, I come across a transit map that is just so unfit for purpose that all I can do is scratch my head and ponder, “Just why?” This is one of those maps. Produced by (or on behalf of) Newark International Airport, it purports to show regional rail services that you can connect to at the airport via its AirTrain. However, it🔸AB开奖网澳洲幸运10官网网页s so poorly thought out and executed that it🔸AB开奖网澳洲幸运10官网网页s of very little […]

May 1, 2021 marks Amtrak🔸AB开奖网澳洲幸运10官网网页s 50th anniversary! On that day in 1971, most regional and long-distance trains in the United States either disappeared or became part of the new national rail carrier🔸AB开奖网澳洲幸运10官网网页s network (there were some exceptions to this rule, which we🔸AB开奖网澳洲幸运10官网网页ll get to later). While there are plenty of maps out there that show the general extent of Amtrak🔸AB开奖网澳洲幸运10官网网页s nascent system — including one that I made myself as part of an historical series […]

Submitted by Adam, who says: Here🔸AB开奖网澳洲幸运10官网网页s my proposal for a low-floor LRT system in Downtown, West Palm Beach, FL (pop. ~110,000). It🔸AB开奖网澳洲幸运10官网网页s fun to think about as West Palm actually grew up as a fairly dense railroad town in the 1920s around the Seaboard and FEC stations. Wedged between two large lakes and the intercoastal waterway, the downtown is a fairly dense north-south oriented grid, with a mix of historic homes and apartment towers. The […]

Yes, that James Niehues. As you🔸AB开奖网澳洲幸运10官网网页d expect from the acclaimed master of ski resort maps, the mountains in this map are gorgeously rendered, and Amtrak🔸AB开奖网澳洲幸运10官网网页s routes are drawn as straight red lines — almost as if they were ski lifts across the country. I particularly like it 🔸澳洲开奖 a route line “disappears” behind a particularly tall mountain — it🔸AB开奖网澳洲幸运10官网网页s something that really sells the implied dimensionality of the map. Future Map: Cascadia High-Speed Rail Network by Oran Viriyincy

Future Maps

Created on behalf of a new advocacy group for true high-speed rail in the Pacific Northwest – the aptly named CascadiaRail – this is probably my favourite map of 2018 so far. It’s clear, beautiful, representative of the region, and is wonderfully aspirational – presenting a clear and exciting vision of a possible future. I especially like that there’s no state or national borders shown at all: the region is instead defined by the natural […]

Here's a fun little project: an interactive timeline of Amtrak's passenger rail routes from its inauguration in 1971 through to the current day. Using the extensive Amtrak timetable archives over at the Museum of Railway Timetables (well worth a visit!), I've created maps in five year increments -- 1971, 1976, 1981, etc. -- that show the changing face of passenger rail in the United States over the last 40-plus years. A tongue-in-cheek rationalisation of Bay Area rail transit to remove all the slashes in those terribly long and indecisive station names: North Concord/Martinez, Warm Springs/South Fremont, etc. Amusing, but also a pointed look at the peculiarly American habit of attempting to appease everyone 🔸澳洲开奖 it comes to naming stations. Now, can someone do one of these for Washington, DC? *cough* U Street/African-American Civil War Memorial/Cardozo *cough* Source: Urban Life Signs

A Look at Amtrak Under the Proposed Federal Budget

A federal budget outline from the Trump Administration looks to slash funding for rail transportation, including a complete elimination of federal funds for long-distance Amtrak routes like the Empire Builder, Southwest Chief and California Zephyr.  The map above, adapted from my Amtrak as Subway Map project, shows what the “national” passenger rail network could look like under this proposal: isolated, separate rail services, with no cross-country connections and over 220 stations without Amtrak rail service. Chicago, […]
